For over two years Housing Action Southwark & Lambeth (HASL) has been organising around the needs of people in our local areas, so that we can learn together, fight together and empower ourselves.

We have regular meetings to discuss our housing and welfare issues, we take direct action to support each other, we hold skills and knowledge sharing sessions, produce resource leaflets to hand out during our info stalls – and, with deepening poverty and inequality, it was a logical step for HASL to organise free lunch clubs for our members, supporters, our families, friends, neighbours, and anyone interested in HASL and what we do.

We organise our almost-monthly lunch clubs together at our regular meetings. We collect food donations from local shops and markets and are building a network of shops and stall holders who can make regular food donations to provide the ingredients we need to cook. On the day, a number of volunteers cook up delicious, nutritious food together at the venue. People have been kind enough to bring delicious homemade dishes for us to share too.

As well as free nutritious food and good company, we also ran a homelessness rights workshop during one of our lunch clubs and have plans for more workshops at future lunch clubs.

Our lunch clubs are also friendly for all ages! A lot of HASL members have children, so we always make sure that there is stuff for them to do – at previous lunch clubs we organised cake making and decorating, games and other activities.

Our next club is special. It’s not technically a ‘lunchclub’ – it’s our Christmas party! We had a great time at our last Christmas social, so we are doing it again! HASL will be joined by other LCAP groups who are also fighting to challenge bad housing and institutional gatekeeping in their boroughs. We’d also like to invite friends, supporters, other local grassroots groups, and new faces!

We will be using this time to enjoy cooking and eating collectively sourced food together, to play games, help out with kid’s activities and generally have fun, as well as to reflect on the year and think about how we can support each other in the future. It’s a great opportunity for people interested in what HASL and other LCAP groups do to come and say hi and have some fun with us!

When: Saturday 17th December 2016, 2pm-7pm (hot food served at 5pm)

Where: Pembroke House, 80 Tatum Street, London, SE17 1QR

We can only sustain and grow the lunch clubs with the help and support of others. If you’d like to get involved in helping to organise the lunch clubs, help out with getting donations from local shops/market stalls, help with leafletting, help out with cooking tasty food on the day, help out organising and running kids activities on the day, or all of the above, please send us an email:

You can also get in touch with us via Twitter: @HousingActionSL and on Facebook.

If you work in a shop or a local market stall and would like to join our donations network and make a regular food donation to the HASL lunch clubs, please get in touch!

And, if you’d like to make a money donation please click over to our ‘Donate to HASL’ tab for more information.

We would also like to show much love to the London Campaign Against Police and State Violence (LCAPSV), who have supported the lunch clubs. Here’s to growing a solidarity network across South London!
